We are the Congregational Unitarian Church, serving the residents of McHenry County and adjacent areas. We are affiliated with the Unitarian Universalist Association, an association of individual congregations who, based on the principle of freedom of conscience, urges its members to seek spiritual growth, responsibly search for their own truth and meaning, treat others with justice, equity, and compassion, and work for a worldwide community of peace, liberty, and justice for all.
Below are some key statements used in our worship services. These statements will give you some understanding of what we believe.
The Seven Principles of the Unitarian Universalist Association
- The inherent worth and dignity of every person
- Justice, equity, and compassion in human relations
- Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations
- A free and responsible search for truth and meaning
- The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and society at large
- The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all
- Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part
We journey as a family toward:
Spiritual growth
Freedom in faith
Celebration of diversity
Commitment to action
Devotion to each other, the community, and the Earth
Love is Our Doctrine
Love is the doctrine of this church,
The quest for truth is its sacrament,
And service is its prayer.
To dwell together in peace,
To seek knowledge in freedom,
To serve human need,
To the end that all souls shall
grow into harmony with the Divine -
Thus do we covenant with each other and with God.
Be Ours a religion which, like sunshine, goes everywhere;
Its temple, all space;
Its shrine, the good heart;
Its creed, all truth;
Its ritual, works of love;
Its profession of faith, divine living.
If you have read these statements carefully, you already know us pretty well.
